Many women experience swelling in their lower limbs after becoming pregnant. During the late stages of pregnancy, many expectant mothers find that their feet are so swollen that they can't even fit into their shoes, and the swelling in their calves is also quite noticeable. Swelling during pregnancy is related to various physiological changes in the late stages, such as an increase in circulating blood volume, elevated estrogen levels, and increased sodium and water retention, all of which can lead to edema. Additionally, the continuous enlargement of the uterus compresses the inferior vena cava, affecting venous return, which can also cause swelling. Generally, this type of swelling may lessen or even disappear after rest for mothers in the late stages of pregnancy.
How can swelling during pregnancy be alleviated?
First, expectant mothers should prioritize rest and relaxation, ensuring they get plenty of rest and sleep, and maintain a happy, relaxed state of mind. Mothers-to-be can soak their feet in hot water before bed to relieve fatigue while promoting local blood circulation and reducing swelling in the calves and ankles. Additionally, elevating the lower limbs while sleeping, lying flat on your back with your feet slightly raised at a 15-20 degree angle, can speed up blood return, alleviate the uterus' pressure on the inferior vena cava, and effectively reduce foot swelling during pregnancy.
Second, pay attention to your daily diet. During pregnancy, it's beneficial to consume more high-protein foods and fresh vegetables and fruits. If swelling is significant, reduce intake of high-protein foods and consider having a urine test and blood pressure check to rule out the possibility of gestational hypertension or kidney damage. A light, low-fat, low-salt diet is advisable in the late stages of pregnancy.
Third, pregnant women should balance work and rest. In cases of severe swelling, it may be necessary to temporarily stop working and rest at home. It's advisable not to sit or stand for long periods in the late stages of pregnancy. Left lateral lying is the recommended sleeping position during this time as it helps reduce swelling.
Moreover, if circumstances permit, pregnant women should engage in appropriate forms of exercise, such as swimming, which is particularly beneficial for reducing swelling. During pregnancy, it's best to avoid wearing overly tight clothing and opt for maternity overalls or specially designed maternity trousers with drawstrings.
