Although applying face masks is something every woman does, many are not entirely clear on the correct way to do it. Incorrect application not only prevents the face from absorbing the essence of the mask effectively but may also lead to skin issues. So, what is the right way to apply a face mask? Below, we’ll explain how to do it properly.
Steps:
Step 1: Cleanse Your Face
No matter what type of mask you use, the first step is always to remove makeup and thoroughly cleanse your skin. Only by removing dirt and oil from the pores can the essence of the mask be fully absorbed. When washing your face, it’s best to use warm water or apply a warm towel to your face for a while to open up the pores before using the mask.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Many people try to save time by applying masks while showering, but this can actually lead to acne problems. Additionally, it’s easy to lose track of time when multitasking. The best time to apply a mask is right after a shower at night. Nighttime is when the skin absorbs nutrients and repairs itself most effectively. After a shower, blood circulation increases, and pores are dilated, making it easier for the skin to absorb the nutrients from the mask.
If you notice your skin looking dull, rough, or uneven, it’s time to exfoliate. For oily skin, exfoliate every 1-2 weeks depending on your skin’s condition. For dry or sensitive skin, daily cleansing already removes some dead skin cells, so exfoliation isn’t needed frequently—no more than three times a month, or as necessary.
If you’re using a clay mask with cleansing properties, you can skip the exfoliation step. Exfoliation is meant to prepare the skin for nourishing, hydrating, or brightening masks.
Step 3: Apply Essence as a Base
Next, don’t apply the mask directly! Start by applying a skincare essence or use a serum or toner to prep your skin for optimal absorption. This will make the mask more effective.
Depending on the type of mask you’re using, apply the corresponding essence. For example, use a brightening essence with a whitening mask or a hydrating essence with a moisturizing mask.
Remember, masks cannot replace regular skincare products, so don’t skip your usual toner, moisturizer, eye cream, or face cream.
Step 4: Apply the Mask
Now it’s time to use the mask! For sheet masks, unfold the mask and center it on your nose, then smooth it outwards to ensure it fits snugly against your face. Smooth the edges to prevent curling.
For cream or clay masks, apply evenly and follow the product instructions for the right amount. Not all masks work better when applied thickly.
Step 5: Massage for Absorption
After removing the mask, gently pat your face and use circular motions to help the essence absorb. Any excess essence can be applied to your neck or hands.
While massaging, you can lift and press from your cheeks upwards, starting from your chin and cheekbones towards your forehead. This helps prevent sagging and reduces the appearance of smile lines.
Step 6: Lock in Moisture with Lotion
Don’t think you’re done after applying the mask! To ensure the essence penetrates and is absorbed, you need to lock in the moisture. Follow up with your usual moisturizer or face cream to keep your skin hydrated overnight. Only then will you truly experience the magical “overnight transformation” effect of the mask.
