Chronic Bad Mood May Not Be Just a Personality Trait, Study Finds

Temperament and character influence people's lives. Some people have particularly bad tempers and cannot control their emotions. When encountering unpleasant situations, they may become agitated or yell, which could be a sign of certain illnesses and requires timely medical check-ups.

What illnesses could bad temper be associated with?

1. Hypertension

Hypertension usually occurs in middle-aged and elderly people. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, hypertension is generally related to emotional frustration and irritability. When these emotions arise, they can cause an increase in liver fire and liver yang. Patients with hypertension, due to excessive liver fire, have overactive sympathetic nerves and disordered central nervous system, leading to irritability and anger.

Hypertension is mainly divided into three stages, and regardless of the stage, it affects mental state. Patients with stage one hypertension have large fluctuations in blood pressure, and their emotions change with these fluctuations, making them easily agitated and prone to anger. As hypertension progresses, more discomfort symptoms such as headaches and palpitations appear, increasing psychological burden and making emotions unusually unstable, often getting angry or impulsive over small matters. Stage three hypertension causes certain damage to the heart, kidneys, and brain, leading to a loss of compensatory ability. Particularly, heart failure, kidney failure, and hypertensive encephalopathy can damage the patient's mental health to varying degrees. Patients with advanced hypertension experience unusually low and depressed emotions, sometimes feeling restless or having persecutory delusions.

2. Diabetes

When blood sugar rises, metabolic functions become disordered, hindering the absorption and metabolism of B vitamins in the body, leading to a severe deficiency of B vitamins. Vitamin B1 can affect nerve tissue and mental state. Vitamin B6 is involved in estrogen, tryptophan, and sugar metabolism. Vitamin B12 participates in amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism and also manages the integrity of the nervous system. A deficiency of B vitamins can affect the stability of the nervous system, causing mood swings and irritability. Therefore, if an elderly person's temper suddenly worsens, their blood sugar levels should be checked.

3. Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism refers to the hyperplasia and overactivity of thyroid tissue, producing and secreting large amounts of thyroid hormones. Besides emotional agitation and irritability, patients with hyperthyroidism may also experience palpitations, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, rapid heartbeat, increased appetite, weight loss, general weakness, difficulty concentrating, protruding eyes, and uncontrollable trembling of the hands and tongue.

Reminder

If an elderly person experiences unexplained worsening of temper, they should promptly go to the hospital to check their blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar, and undergo other examinations to rule out the possibility of illness.
