Postpartum Recovery: Tips for Faster Lochia Discharge

Postpartum lochia is a normal physiological phenomenon; expelling lochia helps to clear out impurities and dirt from the uterus, ensuring it remains infection-free. So, what can be done after childbirth to quickly expel lochia and restore uterine health?

First, maintaining cleanliness in the private area is essential. During the lochia period, it's crucial to keep the vaginal area clean and dry, changing underwear and sanitary pads frequently. It’s advisable to wash the private area with warm water before bed each night to prevent inflammation and infection.

Second, persist with breastfeeding. Allowing the baby to suckle stimulates uterine contractions, accelerates the expulsion of lochia, and promotes uterine recovery.

Third, engage in activities as soon as possible post childbirth. After a natural delivery, you can start moving around 2 hours later, and by the third day post a cesarean section. Moving around as much as your body allows promotes blood circulation, speeds up metabolism, greatly aids in lochia expulsion, and helps the uterus recover sooner.

Fourth, dietary adjustments can be made; it's recommended to consume foods that assist in expelling lochia, such as brown sugar water, which can help with lochia expulsion if consumed within two weeks postpartum. Eating ginger vinegar egg can invigorate blood circulation and dispel cold. Chinese herbal soups like Sheng Hua Tang or Yi Mu Cao Tang can also promote blood circulation and speed up lochia expulsion. However, women with excessive postpartum lochia should temporarily avoid these foods to prevent continuous vaginal bleeding. It's important to avoid raw, cold, spicy, and irritant foods during the confinement period.

Additionally, gently massaging the uterus daily can promote uterine contractions. For example, placing the palm on the lower abdomen and pressing down gently in a clockwise circular motion can stimulate uterine contractions.
